London is a huge metropolis that perfectly balances history, culture and the arts. The British Museum features human history, art and culture.
The British Museum contains a collection of about eight million works. It is considered one of the largest and most comprehensive museum of its kind, displaying over 94 galleries! The museum dates back to 1753 and the original building stood at the same site. It mainly featured work by physician and scientist, Hans Sloane. During his time, his collection consisted of over 70,000 objects from many parts of the world.
Today, the British Museum’s collection is from all over the world. The Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan features the world’s largest collection of Egyptian antiquities, next to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The museum contains seven permanent galleries displaying Egyptian art works, sculptures and more. The Department of the Middle East contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of Mesopotamian antiques outside of Iraq. Needless to say, the rest of the collections are just as impressive.
You could spend hours wandering around the galleries, admiring the prints and drawings and learning more about the history of Britain and much of the world at this free history, art and culture museum.
